The best way to get around in Mumbai

Getting around in Mumbai can be an adventure unto itself for those that are unversed in travel throughout India’s larger cities. Keep in mind that Mumbai is one of the largest cities in India and hosts a variety of terrains and neighborhoods. The first key to fast travel in this city is to know where you are going regardless of whether you choose to take a train, bus, tuk-tuk or taxi.

A common mode of travel in Mumbai is the famed taxis of India. Typically painted black and yellow, the taxi’s age is usually obvious by simply observing the age of the meter which may resemble an early 70s mechanical clock radio. Just because the taxi is old does not necessarily mean it will not deliver you to your destination but be cautious. Again, having an idea of where you are going before getting into a taxi is important. If you are relying on the taxi driver to know your destination, you may be in for an unfavorable surprise. Taxi drivers will typically never say they do not know where something is, so if you feel the need to affirm that the driver knows where he is going then ask follow up questions about the destination.

Another key to fast travel is to avoid times of extreme congestion. As with any major city, traffic will peak in the evening hours and around nine in the morning. If you can schedule your travel time during nonpeak hours, you will be amazed by how quickly you can traverse the city. For example, you can travel from the airport to Colaba in less than an hour during nonpeak traffic times or suffer through a four hour trip during high traffic periods. If you must travel during peak traffic then consider renting a scooter. What’s 1 more click? Your boss isn’t watching… Amazing Muggy Mumbai – Mumbai, Singapore and Perth, India
