A Guide for the International Community, moving to and living in, Mumbai

This guide has been compiled for your use and reference by others who have gone through the trials, traumas, joys and hysterics of looking at, moving to and settling into Mumbai. A word of caution - we don't know everything but we hope that this information will help.

On this web site we have included information that we think is relevant to those thinking about moving to the city. A revised guide covering the information on this website, and more that is not, is available in Mumbai from the American Women's Club of Bombay (AWC) or Mumbai Connexions (International Women's Club). Please continue to help others by giving us feedback on any findings you might have on additions, deletions and/or alterations by e-mailing us, so that others may continue to benefit.

So what does Namaskar mean? Well, Namaskar is a common Marathi greeting in India. Marathi is the language of the State of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital. It's sometimes used in answering the phone, the way we say "hello". It originally comes from ancient Sanskrit and can be translated to mean "I salute the Divine in you" or perhaps, "The Divine in me salutes the Divine in you". It is in effect, a greeting and a salute to welcome you to Mumbai.

We hope that this guide will help ease your move to Mumbai through the power of information.
